Officer – Cargo Operations
Job Description:

As Cargo Officer, you are responsible for the operational management and effective management of the third-party handling company’s performance to achieve operational excellence in accordance with the cargo business objectives.

Whilst ensuring the highest standard of Customer Service and simultaneously ensuring the VAA/VAC procedures & policies, safety & security and brand values of the operation are monitored and always maintained. This includes supervision of our cargo GHAs, ensuring compliance with all safety, security and customs requirements.

Operational – Warehouse

  • To ensure that each flight is utilized to its maximum capacity through effective management of third-party handling agents and transport companies, ensuring work undertaken is in accordance with the department’s policies and procedures.
  • To provide direct supervision of third-party handling agents during screening, build up and transfer of cargo to the ramp to ensure compliance with all relevant SOPs.
  • Responsible for all checks relating to DG, including physical checks and ensure all documentation and declarations are present and correct
  • To carry out regular compliance checks on ULDs, cargo pallets to ensure compliance with the COM
  • To respond to requests, enquiries and queries, from whatever source - customers, internal customers, suppliers, etc. - in a prompt and professional manner. Ensuring that the flow of communication between all parties is both accurate and effective and that the highest level of service is always maintained.
  • To maintain good communication and develop effective working relationships at all levels within all areas of the business.

Operational – Ramp

  • To act as the point of reference and contact across the Virgin Atlantic Ramp handling process for the delivery of the day’s Cargo loading Operation
  • To monitor the smooth handling of cargo by third party handling companies on the ramp especially when in transition between handling companies, dealing with any discrepancies or problems that might arise effectively and efficiently
  • To audit the performance of the third-party handling companies on the ramp

Operational – Back Office

  • To complete all data capture for export shipments, with high levels of accuracy
  • To ensure that all relevant documentation and computer inputs are completed and processed efficiently and accurately – including but not limited to UWS, LIR and NOTOC
  • To support ULD control, to ensure proper stock levels of ULDs, identification and isolation of damaged units, and return of excess equipment as applicable
  • To depart flights in Voyager in a timely manner

Operational – Imports

  • To act as the point of reference and contact for import shipments, including regularization
  • Communicating effectively with Virgin Atlantic central teams in the event of any issues or errors, to facilitate swift resolutions
  • To coordinate with the third-party handling agents and customs for any penalties or fines

Are you an experience Air Cargo professional, with excellent operational experience and a willingness to take the lead when required. If you have these skills, along with the skills and experience below, we’d love to hear from you!

  • Extensive experience in Air Cargo Operations, ideally working at this level already
  • Proficient in English, both verbal & written
  • Knowledge of all local regulatory standards and requirements, including customs
  • Have a wide and basic knowledge of the cargo industry, being able to recognize industry terms of reference, paperwork requirements and to be confident in using associated reference manuals (IATA, COM etc.)
  • High attention to detail
  • Experience of operating in a fast-paced warehouse environment
  • Strong communication and influencing skills and experience
