Position Overview:
Reporting to the Manager, Patient Financial Services, the EMS Coding Specialist transcribes and translates emergency transport service clinical records into international classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes, properly prioritized by severity as appropriate for emergency medical transportation services. Utilizing their specialized knowledge of EMS coding, this role accurately and appropriately produces billing charges as part of the claim submission process.
Job Summary:
Researches all information to complete accurate billing processes including assignment of billing charge codes and ICD-10 codes, to include appropriate signs, symptoms, and mechanisms of injury.
Appropriately prioritizes classification codes in order of severity, as deemed appropriate for billing purposes.
Maintains awareness of various payer lists of allowed and appropriate codes for EMS services.
Prioritizes workflow to ensure timely claim submission.
Knowledge of state and federal insurance regulations.
Ability to analyze and problem solve complex issues.
Uphold Medicare, Medicaid and HIPAA guidelines.
Identifies and communicates documentation issue trends.
Identifies and communicates regarding specific clinical documents that non-compliant with clinical documentation standards.
Responsible for accuracy and appropriateness of work product.
Reports quality and documentation issues to designated leadership.
Schedule/Location:
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
Minimum of two years of EMS ICD-10 Coding Experience (excludes coding for other than EMS)
High school diploma or equivalent required
Certification in Medical Coding
Certification in EMS coding or Five years of experience coding EMS records.
Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and the source for interpretation of such codes.
Knowledge of Healthcare common Procedure Coding (HCPCS) codes and the source for interpretation of such codes.
Knowledge of state and federal insurance billing regulations
Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and HIPAA guidelines
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to key proficiently.
