Our Boeing Commercial Airplanes Team is currently looking for you in Hamburg, Germany as a Lighting Design Engineer (Mid-Level) (m/f/d).
Our Payloads organization is responsible for everything you see when you fly; and a lot that you don’t: The Interior of the airplane, along with the Lavatories, Galleys, Cargo compartments, exterior spanings, associated systems, and cabin safety all make up Payloads. We enable our airline customers to fulfil their mission and represent their brand.
In this role you will:
Define, develop, and document aircraft interior lighting system architectures and requirements, covering general lighting, emergency lighting, lighting scenes, and passenger information signs
Perform and approve analyses, simulations, and test activities to validate and verify lighting systems and components meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements
Design and integrate interior lighting systems and components using 3D CAD, optical modeling and simulation tools, and electrical/mechanical integration methods across the product lifecycle
Lead technical coordination with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams, ensuring design maturity, qualification, certification, production readiness, and compliance with Boeing and customer requirements
Ensure regulatory compliance and technical robustness, addressing regulatory changes (e.g., RoHS restriction on mercury within the EU, Minamata Convention in Japan), managing technical risks, and assessing emerging lighting technologies for future aircraft applications

What you bring to the table:
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Avionics, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) or higher degree in engineering
Experience in leading a cross-functional/integrated product team
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Experience: 5+ years of experience in aerospace interiors, lighting technology, materials properties, design criteria, integration, certification (CS/FAR 25), and release processes acquired by working directly with/for aerospace suppliers, airlines, or regulators
Knowledge: Knowledge of optics and lighting system design including the use of optical modeling & simulation tools, such as SPEOS, ASAP, or LightTools, as well as photometric & radiometric verification methods and equipment
Project Management: 5+ years of experience in program or project management, leading project and/or program proposals of varying complexity (including development and execution of schedule milestones, resource assessments, risk and/or issues management)
Familiarity: With Design for Manufacturing (DfM) principles, including experience with electronics manufacturing methods; and with the challenges of addressing component obsolescence and qualifying replacement lighting products for legacy lighting technologies
Development Assurances: Experience applying Systems Engineering processes for functional architecture definition & decomposition, requirements definition & validation, verification planning, and safety assessments
Collaboration: You are experienced in leading complex projects including influencing team members and stakeholders (suppliers, customers, solution providers) involved and are willing to help develop, mentor and coach less experienced staff
Personality: You are a principled, reliable professional who values integrity, safety and accountability, always striving for the highest standards of quality and ethical conduct. Inclusive and collaborative by nature, you communicate transparently, respect diverse perspectives and take ownership to drive results the right way
